Temperature Inversion

What is a temperature inversion?

  • A.A layer where temperature falls twice as fast as the standard rate
  • B.A condition found only inside a thunderstorm
  • C.A layer where temperature increases with altitude instead of decreasing
Correct answer

C. A layer where temperature increases with altitude instead of decreasing

Why

An inversion reverses the normal lapse rate and acts like a lid on vertical mixing. It is often associated with stable air, trapped haze or smoke, and poor visibility below the inversion.
