If the temperature at an airport is well above standard for its elevation, how does density altitude compare with the field elevation?
- A.Density altitude is higher than the field elevation
- B.Density altitude is lower than the field elevation
- C.Density altitude always equals the field elevation
Correct answer
A. Density altitude is higher than the field elevation
Why
Warm air is less dense, so the aircraft performs as if it were at a higher altitude. That equivalent performance altitude is the density altitude, and on hot days it can be thousands of feet above the airport itself.
